Tragedy struck in Walt Disney World when a man died in one of the park’s properties.
Authorities confirmed to People that last week, 39-year-old Wisconsin native Jeffrey Vanden Boom plunged to his death after falling off his hotel room balcony at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Deputies received a call at 5:33 a.m. on Thursday, July 27 and found Vanden Boom unresponsive on the resort’s grounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Contemporary Resort guest also shared their account of what they witnessed during their stay on Reddit. On the r/WaltDisneyWorld subreddit, they wrote, “I’m pretty sure someone just died at our hotel…we got a call at 7:30 [a.m.] someone had a medical emergency and not to go on the balconies and then they had people redirecting us.”
The post continued, “And then we went outside and there’s a tent set up right under a balcony and a it’s all taped up. and a bunch of police vans and a van that says crime scene investigators. It’s really sad but I think because of where it happened somebody jumped off the balcony.”
In a reply, a person who knows the victim wrote, “I know this person personally and their family. They have not determined if it was a fall or suicide, its [sic] still being investigated. He was not a cast member, but a dad. A son. A brother. An uncle. Pray for this family, they are devastated 💔.”
Though the Reddit user suspected the man died by suicide, authorities have ruled Vanden Boom’s death to be accidental.
This is the second time someone has died by falling off the Contemporary Resort’s balcony. In March 2020, authorities were called when a woman died of an apparent suicide and she was pronounced dead on the scene, according to reports from the Orlando Sentinel.
